Is the Supernatural Real?

So let there be no doubt, that God continues to work in a powerful and wonderful way. The gifts of the Spirit poured out on the early Christians are available for us today.

Most folks grow up today in schools that teach that everything has come about as a result of time and chance and natural processes. There is no mention or thought given to God. Mainstream media only supports this notion. What I have demonstrated and will continue to demonstrate is that we live in a world that cannot exist as a result of natural forces. These odds are so small that the universe demands a creator.

It should not surprise us, then, that supernatural events occur throughout the Bible, from the creation of the universe in Genesis to the destruction of this present world and the creation of a new heaven and earth, as recorded in the Book of Revelation.

This is not to imply that there were not times in the Bible when God’s supernatural activities were less evident than at other times. For example, when the angel appeared to Zacheria, Mary, and Joseph in the Gospels, they were exhorted with the words, “Do not be afraid.” It is likely that, through the intertestamental period, up until the birth of Jesus, there was little evidence of the supernatural work of God. However, from the beginning of the Gospels through the events recorded in the Book of Acts, God began to, once again, reveal Himself in a powerful and supernatural way.

God began to pour out His Spirit on all people. Many who were baptized and believed received the gift of tongues. Others received one of the many other spiritual gifts poured out upon believers (e.g., 1 Corithians 12:1-11).

During my pastorate at St. Andrew’s Church, in Syracuse, IN, a group of us came together from different denominations and races to pray for revival. The movement grew to include many churches throughout Goshen, Elkhart, and elsewhere. We held prayer meetings twice daily for months on end. And God began to work in a powerful way.

One of God’s blessings was sending us Evangelist Jimmy Powers. Jimmy is bilingual, speaking both English and Spanish fluently. And his name is very appropriate: “Powers.” God moved in a powerful way amongst the crowds with an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. As a United Methodist Pastor, about that time I was appointed to another church in another town, but God continued to perform wonders.

Time to Revive, an evangelist ministry, became involved at that time. What started out as a group of prayer meetings broke out into evangelism and more revivals. In some cities businesses would close and schools would shut down to work around the evangelist meeting.

So let there be no doubt, that God continues to work in a powerful and wonderful way. The gifts of the Spirit poured out on the early Christians are available for us today.

The Apostle Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 14:1, “Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy.” Let us not give up on seeking God’s love and the spiritual gifts he desires that we have.

In service to Christ,

Mark Eastway

Pastor, Burket Bible Church
